Death and comics

Tue Jun 23, 2009, 9:48 AM
When Captain America was killed off in the comics, I scoffed at all the "tribute" storylines Marvel created for him. Wolverine, Spider-Man, The Fantastic Four, etc., all weeping over his casket. And there was a moving scene where the Falcon asked every single person that Steve Rogers served with in WWII, every single person Steve Rogers saved, etc., to stand up at his funeral. And every single person ends up standing up. And Marvel goes on the news, explaining why they killed of Captain America, yadda yadda.

But the thing was? I couldn't buy any of it. Killing Captain America only served as a shock factor to sell more comics.

Because I knew it was only a matter of time before they brought him back. No one ever stays dead in comics (except Gwen Stacy and Uncle Ben, but that's a different matter).

It would have resonated more if Cap America really did die. For good. For ever. But in comics, death is meaningless. If the comic company is the kind that revives these people over and over again.

Colossus died to create a cure for the mutant plague. He died a hero. Then it was invalidated because he was brought back to life.

Barry Allen, the original Flash, died a hero in the Crisis of Infinite Earths. Now he was brought back.

And after all the pomp and grandeur of Captain America's funeral, he comes back. Well, it's heavily implied he's coming back in the new storyline.

I... really can't appreciate it. Because I can't say I didn't see it coming. A character's life and ultimate sacrifice can be invalidated by a writer and a simple new story arc. Because in comics, death is meaningless.

....

I'm one to talk. Hehe.

Thoughts?

P.S. I've heard rumors that Marvel keeps countdown clocks of their dead characters in their office to keep tabs of how long until they bring them back. I hear Jean Grey is down to a year or so.

batman is dead. for how long? i reckon a fucking black lantern is going to resurrect him as an evil zombie or something, thus leaving the way open to somehow make him properly alive again.

you dont kill off comic characters that make you a lot of money. not for good!

It was a bad idea. I'd expect this of indie works, but not to internationally recognized characters and franchise tie ins.

But that's okay. Every bad story that gets published in mainstream comics just makes independent works look like sparkling diamonds in comparison.

I admit, I don't read many comics. But I AM aware about how the impact and finality of character death is ruined when the authors pull something out of their... heads to bring them back, or create a sort of "Revolving-door-heaven."

On the other hand, having a superhero that revives in name only, passing the mantle to another generation, either by chance or training or destiny..... that would be pretty cool, and gives authors a chance to reinvent the hero's image. I'm just saying.

A strong leader is expected to maintain steadfast resolve in his opinion even if the environment changes or he gets new information. In any other context, that would be considered the first sign of a brain tumor.

i feel you dude..... tho i can see how killing Cap was a gripping end to the Civil War story arc...... his eventual resurrection makes it all seem pointless and sour to me.......
but anyways..... i'm more interested in the Red Hulk arc...... have they found out who he is yet......?

Bruce Wayne isnt dead just trapped in the past. Somewhere around Vandal Savage's timeline. Although I kinda agree with you on that Black Lantern thing, they're bringing back MArtian Manhunter...

I'm still holding out for Sharron being out of her mind , but really what villain kills off the hero as part one of his master plan to destroy everything he holds dear? I'm sure it will still be a good storyline after all it's still all being written by Ed Brubaker so it will be well thought out.

At the end of Final Crisis #7, you see Bruce Wayne brawing the Bat-Signal on the cave wall, after giving an old man one of his batarangs to fend off then other more vicious Cavemen.

and J'onn dies in the first issue of Final Crisis.

Ah, well, that was disappointing. I wonder how long will it take for that abuse to dissipate... It would have been classier if they killed CapAm and made a new one, like they did with the Flash(es) and the GL(s). They've diminished what's left of a young kid's morale by portraying a fantastic universe, filled with lots of heroes, but tormented by recurring flaws and idiotic cliches. Even Mt. Olympus was chaotic. What hope is there for a utopia? (just woke up, mind's a blur. XD)
